Measure for Measure

Thursday, December 16th, 2010

Measure to Measure has come to the end of its intriguing run! Ten Thousand Things has been so pleased to be part of this project with The Public Theater. The responses from audiences were fabulous. Here are a few of the many comments we received from audiences in prisons, homeless shelters, drug rehab facilities and youth at risk centers:

“It was great, great actors and performance. I never seen such a great bunch of actors in my life. Now I’m interested in how they remember all their lines.”

Read all about the show in the New York Post

Many people have asked me what has surprised me most about working at the Public. And honestly, it’s that the process has been so smooth. In the early days of TTT, it was so rocky, trying to get into prisons and homeless shelters and to figure out how this was going to work, with just me as staff. But with the Public’s infrastructure, they have a staff to plan every single thing. Nice!

Punctuating Sound

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

I had the extreme pleasure of spending a week in New York crafting the sound design for the Public’s Measure for Measure. I grew up just outside the city, and my family has deep roots that reach into Brooklyn and Queens. So, although I haven’t lived there for a long time, it’s not alien. To watch Michelle Hensley in this environment, with pretty high stakes, was amazing. And guess what? She was absolutely consistent with the Michelle I know in Minnesota, and that helped me get over any anxiety I was feeling about strutting our TTT stuff in the Big Apple. Ten Thousand Things Theater has joined with The Public Theater to bring TTT’s unique model of theater creation, performance and outreach to New York audiences who have little or no access to the arts. The Public is one of the nation’s preeminent theaters and most respected producers of Shakespeare. Artistic Director Michelle Hensley directed Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure, guiding staff and artists at The Public through TTT’s production model. TTT’s Music Director Peter Vitale provided the soundscape and Resident Scenic Designer Stephen Mohring created the sets.

Tonight, we perform Measure for Measure for our first paid public audience in New York City—at the historic Judson Memorial Church on Washington Square.
